Cities are shaped around the needs of their inhabitants, which results in the optimal regulation of infrastructures and their constant improvements. But the increase in buildings, roads and other needs means a decrease in something else: nature. While connecting to nature is seen as a primal necessity in human life, large-scale cities often lack biodiversity.

Nature or the natural is commonly characterised by that which is untouched by humans, such as sublime wilderness, or the gentleness and calmness of pastures. It is known for its contribution to our mental and physical well-being. While nature is slowly becoming more absent in cities, nature-inspired elements have made their entrance into our world. I find prints of plants at my train station, mountains covered in snow at my dentist and an ocean on a truck. Studies have found that indirect exposure to nature can have similar effect as ‘real’ nature. In other words, we feel better and are healthier in an environment which includes natural elements, even if they are artificial.
