Biography

Mayte Breed (b. 1997) is an artist from Egmond, based in Amsterdam. She studied Environmental Studies with a focus on Biology at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 2019, and completed a BA in Photography at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in 2024. In her practice, she works with photography, moving image, installation and book making.

Breed’s artistic approach is shaped by her background in Biology, as she sees her practice as everyday research. This research allows her to dissect elements from her day-to-day surroundings that often go unnoticed by the public eye. She uses her biological and feminine lens to explore the relation between humans and the urban environment, the role of nature, and the medium of photography. Her photographs and videoworks form a growing archive that she views as an ecosystem; it contains moments that live, interact, and function as a whole. She actively uses this archive to find new associations and meanings.

In 2024 her graduation work was selected for the Best of Graduates exhibition at Gallery Ron Mandos, and she won the RM Photo Price. Her work Ringweg was selected and funded by Het Stadsarchief Amsterdam and obtained in their archive. In 2025, she participated a residency in Lisbon, Portugal and her first solo-exhibition opened end of September at Sanquin, Amsterdam. Her work is part of the collections of Museum Voorlinden, AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Lakeside Collection, KPMG, and Sanquin.
